BIO-SUSHY targets to develop three PFAS-free novel coatings, which will be validated in applications in the textile, food, and cosmetic packaging industries.

  • Providing a safe and sustainable by design manufacturing approach
  • And targeting the textile, food packaging, and cosmetic markets.

The challenge

The BIO-SUSHY project addresses the challenges associated with the widespread use of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in coatings. These substances have high stability and water and oil-repellent properties, but they are also polluting and toxic to humans and the environment. The BIO-SUSHY project aims to develop a sustainable and safe alternative.

The solution

The BIO-SUSHY project proposes a complete operating framework for developing innovative repellent organic and hybrid coatings to obtain PFAS-free alternatives. These coatings with hydrophobic and oleophobic properties will be obtained from bio-based thermoplastic powder and hybrid sol-gel. Advanced functionalization will also be ensured by bio-based additives added to formulations.

BIO-SUSHY’s interdisciplinary expertise

The BIO-SUSHY project is a collaboration between 14 partners from 7 European countries and 1 EU-associated country: 6 research and technology developers (RTDs), 6 SMEs, 1 national association and 1 university. The BIO-SUSHY Team is a well-balanced consortium with experience implementing research and development projects. They will use their combined knowledge to develop sustainable coatings based on three main areas: experimental research, computer modelling, and a sustainable design approach.
