Cluster Activities & Collaborations
BIO-SUSHY actively contributes to a growing European ecosystem of research and innovation initiatives working towards Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) materials and PFAS-free solutions.
Through clustering activities, joint workshops, and technical exchanges, we strengthen collaboration across EU-funded projects to accelerate the development and market uptake of circular, sustainable, and bio-based coatings.
NO-PFAS Cluster (Sister Projects)
BIO-SUSHY is a founding member of the NO-PFAS Cluster, bringing together sister projects working on alternatives to harmful polyfluorinated substances.
Key activities:
Cluster Kick-off Meeting (14 May 2024) – initiated by BIO-SUSHY
Knowledge exchange sessions on:
Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD)
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Social LCA (S-LCA)
Social acceptance
Joint session “Beyond PFAS” at the SICT Conference 2025 (Portugal)
Sister projects:
PROPLANET – Enhanced Safe and Sustainable coatings for supporting the Planet (EU-funded project – GA 101091842)
ZEROF – Development of verified safe and sustainable PFAS-free coatings for food packaging and upholstery textile applications (EU-funded project – GA 101092164)
TORNADO – New Routes of Safe and Sustainable by Design Water and Oil Repellent Biobased Coatings (EU-funded project – GA 10109144)
Circular, Sustainable and Biobased Coating Cluster
This cluster brings together EU-funded projects advancing high-performance, sustainable, and circular bio-based coatings that reduce reliance on fossil-derived materials and improve end-of-life options.
The cluster operates under a Memorandum of Understanding and is facilitated by European Bioplastics.
Scope of Collaboration
– Innovative material design
– Implementation of the SSbD framework
– Validation across multiple applications (textiles, packaging, construction, marine)
– Joint dissemination and communication activities
How it Works
Technical meetings are organised every six months on topics selected by the cluster community.
Cluster Members
BIO4COAT – Funded under the Circular Bio-Based Europe Joint Undertaking, BIO4COAT develops bio-based polyurethane coatings using renewable building blocks and targets TRL5 validation.
(EU-funded project – GA 101215161)
BLUECOAT – BLUECOAT develops low-carbon, bio-based coatings for the marine, textile, and construction sectors.
(EU-funded project – GA 101213072)
SUPREME – SUPREME develops multifunctional antimicrobial nanocoatings combining performance and sustainability.
(EU-funded project – GA 101058422)
