Moving from novel material concepts to functional industrial products requires testing at every stage of production. For the BIO-SUSHY project, taking sustainable food packaging concepts out of the laboratory and onto the manufacturing floor is a critical milestone in proving their real-world viability.
In recent thermoforming trials, Wood K plus (Kompetenzzentrum Holz GmbH) and Ecozema srl società benefit successfully put BIO-SUSHY developments into practice. Together, they transformed coated, fibre-based materials into fully formed food packaging trays.
Developing a sustainable, high-performance coating is only one side of the equation. To truly replace conventional materials, any new coating must withstand the physical demands of standard manufacturing processes without compromising its protective properties or structural integrity.
By successfully thermoforming these coated fibre substrates, the team has demonstrated that the BIO-SUSHY solution is fully compatible with existing packaging production methods. This accomplishment marks a vital step forward in transitioning from material and coating development to a tangible, scalable packaging demonstrator.
