BIO-SUSHY Project Advances Standardization Efforts with CEN/TC 411

On May 19, 2025, our project, led by our partner UNE – Asociación Española de Normalización, took a significant step forward in its standardization activities. We had the privilege of engaging with the CEN/TC 411 “Bio-based products” team, represented by Maria Gustafsson (Secretariat) and Ylwa Alwarsdotter (Chair), in a productive and insightful meeting.

The session began with our Project Coordinator, Mireille Poelman (Materia Nova), providing an overview of our project. This was followed by detailed presentations from Ivana Burzic (Wood K Plus), Guillaume Direur (IFTH), and Eric Khousakoun (Materia Nova) on the main outcomes and future plans of their respective use cases on food packaging, textile, and glass packaging, respectively. These use cases focus on developing innovative bio-based alternatives to PFAS coatings, showcasing the project’s commitment to sustainable solutions.

Maria and Ylwa expressed their appreciation for the high quality of the BIO-SUSHY project and their enthusiasm for staying informed about its future developments. The meeting also opened a dialogue on potential contributions to standardization, with plans to collaborate with sister projects such as Tornado, ZeroF, and Proplanet. These collaborations aim to identify common challenges and standardization gaps to further advance the field of bio-based products.

Representatives from BIO-SUSHY partners, including Materia Nova, WOOD K PLUS, SIKEMIA, RESCOLL, and IFTH, actively participated, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the project. Looking ahead, the CEN/TC 411 Working Groups are scheduled to meet again in September 2025, and BIO-SUSHY may be invited to contribute to these discussions.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Maria Gustafsson and Ylwa Alwarsdotter for their time and the fruitful exchange of ideas.
