BIO-SUSHY Holds Second Review Meeting as Project Enters Final Phase

On September 18, 2025, the BIO-SUSHY consortium held its second review meeting, covering progress during months 13 to 30 of the project. This milestone marks the start of the third and final period of BIO-SUSHY, a Horizon Europe initiative focused on developing PFAS-free, bio-based coatings for textiles, food packaging, and glass cosmetic packaging.

The Project Officer, an Expert Reviewer, and representatives from all partner organizations attended the meeting. The agenda included an overview of the project’s objectives and workplan, followed by technical presentations from each of the three case studies:

  • Textile coatings – led by APPLUS RESCOLL
  • Food tray coatings – led by WOODKPLUS
  • Glass packaging coatings – led by MATERIA NOVA

Each case study showcased advancements in:

  • Coating formulation and development (WP2)
  • Physical modeling and simulation (WP3)
  • Toxicity assessment and SSbD framework implementation (WP4)

Additional sessions highlighted the development of computational tools for Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD), including QSAR models and predictive simulations, presented by 7P9, PROTOQSAR, and CNR. The meeting also addressed broader aspects of the value chain, such as:

  • Stakeholder engagement and social acceptance – ZSI (WP1)
  • Standardization contributions – UNE (WP5)
  • Impact maximization strategies – AXIA (WP5)
  • Project management and resource utilization – Coordinator (WP6)

The Project Officer and Expert Reviewer expressed their satisfaction with the project’s progress, particularly commending the work on the SSbD framework and the development of innovative PFAS-free coating solutions.

As BIO-SUSHY moves into its final phase, the consortium remains committed to delivering sustainable, safe, high-performance alternatives to PFAS-based coatings. This work contributes to a healthier environment and more responsible industrial practices.
