BIO-SUSHY Project Presents PFAS-Free Innovations at Bioeconomy for Change Webinar

The BIO-SUSHY project was proud to participate in an online webinar hosted by Bioeconomy for Change (B4C) on the topic of “PFAS and Bioeconomy: General Introduction and Bio-Sourced Alternatives.” The event, held on 28 March 2025, brought together experts, researchers, and industry stakeholders to discuss sustainable solutions for replacing PFAS with bio-based alternatives.

Representing BIO-SUSHY, Ivana Burzic from Wood K plus – Kompetenzzentrum Holz GmbH delivered an insightful presentation on our work in developing PFAS-free thermoplastic-based powders for food packaging applications.

After providing an overview of the project with its objective to develop three novel PFAS-free bio-based coatings for water and oil repellency, and the implementation of the SSbD approach, a significant focus of the presentation was on PFAS-free thermoplastic powder coatings for paper-based food trays, developed in collaboration with Ecozema. Key features include:

  • 100% replacement of PFAS while maintaining water and oil repellency
  • Thermal resistance and minimal impact on recyclability or compostability
  • Validation through rigorous testing, including food contact and migration tests

The presentation also covered aspect related to the innovative techniques used in the project such as the formulation based on PHA, PBS, carnauba wax, and alkoxysilane-modified lignin for our bio-based thermoplastic powders, and the toxicological teststing and environmental assessment performed.

Looking ahead, the BIO-SUSHY team dedicated to the food packaging value chain is focused on:

  • Increasing lignin content in coating formualtions
  • Upscaling production using roll-to-roll dry powder application or extrusion coating technologies
  • Conducting thermoforming trials and real-world testing with end-user Ecozema.
