European Coatings Show Conference 2025 Conference Proceedings Available

The BIO-SUSHY project was featured at the European Coatings Show Conference 2025 last March in Nuremberg (Germany), where research partners presented new findings on PFAS-free, bio-based coating technologies. The full conference proceedings are now available in the BIO-SUSHY Zenodo community, providing detailed insights into the project’s recent advancements.

The published work highlights the project’s multidisciplinary approach, integrating Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) principles from the start to develop high-performance, environmentally responsible coatings.

The proceedings comprise three key studies, each targeting a critical application sector:

  1. Sustainable Food Packaging with Biodegradable Thermoplastics
This presentation details the development of bio-based, biodegradable powder coatings using materials such as PHA and PBS, enhanced with lignin-based fillers. Applied to paper substrates, these coatings offer strong water repellency and grease resistance, with a water contact angle of 80 degrees and a grease resistance rating that exceeds industry standards. These qualities make them an ideal PFAS-free solution for food packaging. For example, sandwich wrappers may remain dry and intact for hours after application, enhancing the user experience by preventing leaks and maintaining freshness. The thermoformability of the coatings provides flexibility in packaging design, allowing for practical and aesthetic customizations.

  1. PFAS-Free Textile Finishes via Sol-Gel Technology
This work presents new sol-gel finishing solutions for textiles that deliver durable water and oil repellency without fluorinated chemicals. The development combines computational modelling for performance prediction with hazard assessment to ensure both functionality and safety.

  1. Durable Ceramic-like Coatings for Glass Cosmetic Packaging
This research explores hybrid organic-inorganic sol-gel coatings for the interior of glass cosmetic containers. These coatings are designed for low fluid adhesion and high mechanical durability to maximize product recovery, support packaging reuse, and reduce waste.
